What is Semen Retention?

Semen Retention as taught by Authentic Tantra Practitioners, is the practice of separating orgasm from ejaculation.

Ancient philosophies and medical practices from Asia and India have long claimed that semen retention leads to better health and longer life.

Semen, which is in essence the very life-force of a man, must be retained in the body to maintain a man’s health.

  4. Great post. This is a great explanation of what I feel everyday. Key is to still allow urges but just not cum.     1. Circumcision is a massive genital trauma and can actually be a factor in premature ejaculation. The issue for men in lasting longer is more about learning to relax with sensation and filling the entire body with pleasurable sensation, as opposed to just the head of the penis 🙂

I have practiced semen retention for a few years and it has changed my life for the better, much better, However I do have a question, I like to get to the very edge and try to stay there as long as possible. I can easily stay at the edge for 20 minutes sometimes for an hour or so. I think one and one half hours is my record. At that point it is just so good I can’t handle it any more and of course there are other things that need to be done. While at the edge of ejaculation I do however emit some semen, Is that OK? I’m not talking about full blown ejaculation and I’m not talking about clear precum. What are your thoughts on this? Should I try to eliminate total retention? Thanks

  9. Thank you Devi. My intuition told me that it was good to move the semen and to always have a “fresh batch”. If I go for 3 or 4 days without some emission the semen seems to get grayer and thinner and not as fresh. Thanks for sharing this valuable information.

  10. All the mainstream research suggests that semen retention has a correlation to prostate cancer.
    I have been practising semen retention for about a year now but often feel obliged to release fluids owing to the medical data.
    Before reasing this website & other similar ones I felt intuitively that semen retntion would be good for my mind body & spirirt and so it is.
    But the results seen in science trouble me & I’m uncertain as to the best advice.
    As a man in my 40’s prostate cancer is at the back of my mind but more than ever, semen release leaves me overly hungry, lethargic, cranky & moe unsettled. I want to believe the tantric advice but require a little more persuasion.

First off I want to correct this statement – “All the mainstream research suggests that semen retention has a correlation to prostate cancer.” This is actually not true. I have read the studies referred to in the media and #1- they are not studying semen retention, they are studying the effects of frequent ejaculation on the prostate. #2- Despite the spin of mainstream media, the results have NOT shown that frequent ejaculation is good for the prostate. The studies have shown that frequent sexual activity with ejaculation is potentially healthy for the prostate. The research has NOT studied frequent sexual activity WITHOUT ejaculation, because the researchers of the study don’t even know that is a possibility. The only thing these studies have in fact proven is that white, cisgender, heterosexual men who are sexually active, either with themselves or a partner, may possibly have fewer instances of a certain type of prostate cancer than white, cis-gender, heterosexual men who have less sexual activity. That’s what the study ACTUALLY says. The researchers also mention that they failed to take into account that men having less frequent sexual activity may have other health-related issues in place. The finding that less sexual activity may contribute to prostate illness is consistent with Taoist philosophy around stagnant energy causing illness.
