This past week we shared a video answering a question about expanding clitoral orgasms (for those of us who have them), and our recommended “therapy” included the practice of “tantric edging”.
But what is Tantric Edging and what makes it Tantric?
“Edging” refers to a practice in Western sexology in which a person stimulates their genitals (and/or other pleasure zones) to almost the peak of climax, but then slows down or stops stimulation before the actual climax occurs. The practitioner cycles through as many rounds of approaching and backing off orgasm as they can, before eventually having a climatic orgasm.
In western sexology, this practice has been shown to be very particularly effective for men and people with penises who suffer from premature ejaculation.
Learning about Edging was not a part of my Tantric training. The concept and practice of riding the waves and currents of pleasure as they build and flow throughout my physical and energy body was, and still IS, a part of my Tantric training, and continues to be a vital part of the sexual yoga methods we teach at IATE.
In our school and our lineage of practice, what makes a practice “tantric” at its very base is the intention, presence, and awareness that you bring to that activity. And this includes ANY activity; movement, meditation, connection with others, and physical or sexual pleasure.
This is the very basic foundation from which you can then layer additional tantric methods such as, Ocean Breath and activating the energy body with Tibetan 5 Element Tantra.
But the very foundation of tantric practice is YOUR presence. YOUR attention and YOUR INTENTION for the yoga you are practicing to be a vehicle for a more fulsome connection with your sacred self.
In authentic lineage-based tantra, whatever activity we engage in is an opportunity for us to cultivate a greater sense of connection with our ultimate nature, which is the underlying truth of all existence. These are nice big words and intellectual concepts, but the practice of authentic tantra yoga allows us to experience this as an embodied reality.
The tantric edging practice that we teach at IATE is called “Orgasmic Awareness”, or OAP.
OAP is a tantric sexual yoga practice which consists of weaving mindfulness, meditation and yogic breathing to connect more deeply with the physical and energy body, while using pleasure to heal, enrich, and repair the subtle channels of the energy body.
OAP also includes the sweet and sacred ritual of using the Tibetan 5 Element system to create an umbrella of “sacred space” for your sacred sexual yoga practice. OAP is taught as a precursor to the more advanced Authentic Tantra yoni massage, which incorporates the Tibetan 5 Element tantric system of healing.
